Learning from experience? Drawing St. Mary’s Church at Ashbury.

Here in Oxfordshire we’ve been waiting for the summer proper to arrive. With high pressure over the North Sea and winds from the northeast we’ve been having a lot of cloudy mornings – not good for drawing. However yesterday the Sun came out a little earlier and it was like a proper summer’s day for a while!

I took advantage of this by going out, to visit Faringdon and doing some sketching of my favourite building there. I then headed towards the Ridgeway and the small village of Ashbury – to sketch the church there – on a very pleasant summer’s evening!

Those of you how follow my posts may know that this is a church that I’ve drawn before and deep in my catalogue of former posts the is one from October 2021 called ‘Drawing St Mary’s Church at Ashbury’ Here is my sketch from that post.

Ashbury church

Well, here was my view and sketch from yesterday…

Sketch of St Mary’s, Ashbury

… and really there isn’t that much difference.

One thing that has happened is that I’ve run out of space on the paper (again)- but does that matter? I tend to think that it doesn’t – because my experience is that I could just go back and add another sheet of paper and add some more drawing. Then with a bit of ‘cut and paste’ and some redrawing I might have a more complete image.

So – learning from experience ; maybe not. Does it matter? – probably not!
