From a big barn to a ruined barn – sketching outside of Oxford

Last week I was out drawing the big ‘Oxford North’ building site with its proposed ‘Big Red barn’, offices, housing and attendant building cranes. This week as a change I decided to draw something a little smaller – a ruinous shed or barn I saw passing by to the nearby village of Yarnton. This was only about a mile away from the Oxford North development ‘as the crow flies’ and quite a contrast. It is the sort of shed beloved by artists – Quite ramshackled and starting to fall apart, with attendant overgrown brambles and vegetation.

Here is my view – from this photo you can probably tell it was a quite a dull day – but what the photo doesn’t show is that there was also a pretty cold and raw north-easterly wind blowing that made sketching a bit more uncomfortable. This encouraged me to sketch quickly and then move on – time to head back and have a cup of tea!

Here is my initial sketch in-situ – and then sketch scanned in and cleaned up a little..

So maybe not one of my best – perhaps it is one to go back to on a sunnier warmer day?

For comparison – and a bit of contrast – here is a link to my previous post of the Oxford North development.
