The Old School and Parish Clerk’s House, Yarnton.

The village is just to the north of Oxford and about 1/2 mile outside the A34 bypass. It has a Historic Village sign outside the old turnpike and there is some history, though you might not know it from passing by on the main road to or from nearby Woodstock. In a previous post I was out sketching a big modern development (Oxford North) which is going up on the Oxford side of the A34 – Sketching Oxford North . I fancied sketching something a bit more historic and so made the short ride to the former Parish Clerk’s House (and old school) in Yarnton.

Setting up, this was my view…

… and my sketch in-situ.

With passing showers and the light going quickly this was quite a rapid sketch – and had a jaunty angle to it. That’s o.k. – the rain produced a nice rainbow and a lot of urban sketchers like to slant or distort their buildings anyway.

Here is the finished sketch. Some details I like are the two front doors – presumably for when it was a School House and the clock above one of those doors.
