Sketching on the corner of Catte Street and Broad Street, Oxford

In the summertime and particularly on a weekend, Oxford can be a busy place. Making the trip in on a Sunday and cycling along Broad Street it is really noticeable that the tourist season is upon us – especially when you have three or four coach parties in the same place at the same time. in my experience, if you want to avoid the crowds then go early – or late. Never mind, it was still a nice day and the light was good.

I’ve done a fair amount of sketching on Broad Street and one of the views that I’d quite like to capture is of the corner of Catte Street and Broad Street. So I proceeded to set myself up outside the former Indian Institute (now The Oxford Martin School) and started sketching.

Here is my view:

and my sketch in-situ:

All-in-all I was probably sketching for half an hour and I will probably appear in some of the snap-shots of various coach parties! I also got to talk to another fellow Oxford Artist- which is always good – and interesting.

Anyway, after sketching for a while it was time to move on and stretch my legs again. Here is a scan of my finished sketch – a bit rough around the edges and probably needing some more work – but something that I am likely to come back to again.
