Sketching The Randolph Hotel, Oxford

The Randolph Hotel in Oxford is one of the city’s older hotels. I’ve drawn The Randolph before and this can be a bit daunting as it is a large building and has lots of architectural details. However, on a damp Sunday afternoon I thought I’d try sketching it again.

So setting up to draw, here is my view…

…and my sketch in-situ.

At this time of year Oxford is a little bit quieter although there is a new in-take of students discovering the city. Also, despite the rain, there were still occasional coach parties passing by. Some stop to take photos and may sometimes find their way into my on-going sketch.

I should have worn a warmer jacket because after an hour or so sitting in the shade it was definitely time to go warm up somewhere. Here is a view of my more finished sketch -and a scanned and slightly cleaned up version.
