Wantage – the Market Place & King Alfred’s statue

One Saturday back in October last year I made a visit to Wantage in SW Oxfordshire. When the market packed up in the late afternoon I had a go at drawing the Market Place looking towards St.Peter’s and St. Paul’s church.

Here is my view and my sketch in-situ.

With the town quietening down in the late afternoon, there was a nice sort of lull, with just a few people catching the bus, making their way home or perhaps starting their evenings in the various pubs. I think there was some sort of fancy-dress theme going on as well – and I suppose that helps the occasion along. For me, I just took in the shifting light, from the sunlight falling on the back of the King Alfred statue to the gathering cloud, and enjoyed doing some sketching. After doing the drawing below it was also time for me to go and time to head back for some tea.
